Social-networking sites a ‘hotbed’ for spyware

Youths on MySpace and similar sites aren’t cautious about surfing the Web

Spyware’s threat is getting nastier. Infection rates are on the rise, in part thanks to the surging popularity of social-networking sites like MySpace.com.

McAfee Virusscan 2005 9.0 [LB]An interesting read over at MSNBC - it’s always good to be reminded that you need to keep a good anti - virus/adware/spyware programs up-to-date. It’s a shame that there are so many ####### people out there who enjoy messing up your computer for a quick buck, or even worse just for some vain kudos that practically no-one else appreciates.

Bigger Picture Gallery

16 pictures?  Pah!

I was suprised to find you can only stick 16 pictures onto MySpace - it’s not like it’s based on file size either (as far as I can tell), so personally, I think it would be nice to have the option for more space - even if it was paid for.

How big is Flikr?

What’s New With My Friends?

* * * * ½ 7 votes

Wish it was easier to see if your friends have changed their profile in any way - unless they are really good and post a Bulletin, you’ll never know except for visiting every friends profile and reading the whole thing occasionally.

How about adding an “Updated!” icon/title next to a friends icon/name in the Friends Space if they have changed their profile, added new pictures or videos!

Messages

Wish it was easier to message someone from your control panel, rather than having to visit their page, wait for it to load, and then get to a message panel.

[ED: This would link in nice with the recently updated note for friends spaces]

Meez

I came across a link yesterday to the Meez character generator - it’s a sort of dress up doll that can represent your cyber-personality.

MySpace Toolbar for FireFox

* * * * ½ 6 votes

A really useful Extension for FireFox, this unofficial MySpace toolbar can save you several clicks to get to common locations while using MySpace.

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2895/

I’ve been using it for a while now, and do like it’s ability to minimise automatically when you are not in the MySpace site, as well as the drop down links that are relevant to the persons profile you are currently viewing - but who’s styling and taste prohibits you from actually using their page effectively.

The biggest single benefit is the Auto-Login feature, so you never have to go to the front of the MySpace site, just straight to your personal homepage.
Recently updated with new features, this is well worth using if you visit MySpace regularly.

Up and Running

I’ve recently set-up this site to hopefully get some improvements implemented at MySpace.  I’m not criticising MySpace, that’s too easy, no I’m putting forward some ideas and letting the world say whether or not they are any good and hopefully the guys and gals who run MySpace will see these ideas and incorporate them into their upgrades of the site.

If they do - I’ll add Tom back as my friend  ;)

Music Choice, Playlists

* * * ½   7 votes

I would like to see the music player have more controls - so that you could set up a playlist of your favourite songs and let people hear what you like, instead of just the one song for ages until you remember to change it.

It would be a good way to promote the bands that you like as well.

Custom Profile Sections

* * * * ½ 13 votes

To get you started the sections in the Profile Edit - Interests & Personality are useful, but they’re not for everyone.

I wish you could choose what sections you want.

i.e.  add a new section, give it a name and then type in your details.  You could have some default ones already set, that you can rename if you wished.  Then they will be in an order that you like - you can be different to everyone else then.  ;)

WYSIWYG MySpace Profile Editor

HTML coding is not for everyone - I wish for a simple WYSIWYG editor to make my profile look nice without having to pinch code from other sites and not really understand what it is doing anyway…

Also, have it in the options that you can turn it off if it doesn’t work or you’re a L33t coder  ;)

Group Friends

I’d like to see a method of being able to group friends - bit like what you can do in MSN with contacts - so for example; having close friends group, distant friends group, bands friends group, or whatever name you wish to give the group.

Customise My MySpace

* * * * * 9 votes

Strange how the blog part of MySpace, which is the least used in most peoples profiles, is the part which can be customised the most!

You can change quite a lot from headers, colours, custom headers, changing the link colours and adding your own style sheet entries - without resorting to hacks and squeezing them in like in the main MySpace information about you pages.

I wish we had similar or better control of the profile page of your own MySpace like the blog’s do!

Repeating Name

* * *     3 votes

Why does your screen name get repeated 11 times on the same page?  If you’ve arrived at the space of the person, then I guess you should know who it is by the time you scroll down a short way - unless we are all goldfish?
I wish it wasn’t repeated so many times - or you could customise it to make more sense!

Extended Network

* * * * ½ 5 votes

Why is this box on every page?  The whole point of Myspace is for everyone to be available to each other in the netwok - so it’s really pointless and should be removed to let other more interesting things move closer to the top of the page.

Remove Invisible Friends

Having correct number of friends viewable would be nice - I have a few that are invisible, probably due to them deleting their accounts, but my friends number is higher than it should be - not always a bad thing I guess  ;-)

See Who’s Online

* * * ½   6 votes

Being able to see who’s online easier in your personal MySPace home page!

Unless you open up your View All My Friends pages, or see who’re your best buddies, you don’t really know who is online that you may want to chat too!

IIRC - Chatting via MySpace

* * * * ½ 3 votes

They need to add a MYSpace friends chat box - if the person is in your friends space, then they can enter your chat room - if they’re not then they need to be added as your friend.

Then you can chat online in realtime - without having just an IM page open.

Being Able To See Someone’s Full Screen Name

Screen grab of shortened nameI hate it when you sift through the MySpace friends pages, and you see:

Knowing Who’s Your Latest Friend

* * * *   9 votes

I hate trawling through my friend list to see who is the latest addition - it would be nice to be able to sort the list chronologically, with newest first. Then I can see if they should be part of my Top Friends!

Or, having latest friends appear as a list on your homepage.
