The SnapLayout editor is pretty straight forward. You log in with your MySpace credentials, and can use a WYSIWYG editor to make drag-and-drop changes to all the major features of your profile. You can select a pre-made template or start customizing changes on your own. The editor lets you move around boxes, use Flickr photos for a backdrop, adjust text size and style, or even change the entire color pallet of your profile (i.e. summer and winter themes). It can also add a slide show of all your uploaded photos to the header of your profile.

Apologies for the quietness around here recently - real-life caught up with me…

Thankfully, Jasmine has done a lot research recently on some of the irks of MySpace and sent in a fantastic email full of ideas - I've posted the contents below and we can all hope it inspires the owners of MySpace to improve their services for all our benefits.

Profile Privacy

Currently there are two options for myspace users. Your profile can be visible, or private.

Some users aren’t aware of this.
Having your profile set to private simply means only your friends can see your coding/ photos/ heading and your blog. (although your default photo is still displayed for anyone to see) Randoms who view your page only see your default photo, the heading above it, and the default contact table. (the box that says ‘add to friends’ and ‘send message’ etc.)

•From the feedback I’ve had so far, the biggest concerns relating to privacy are photos and comments.

Many people who have an open profile have coding in their profile to hide their comments as it is. (or a link to view the comments, like I do)

And I have a friend who doesn’t want randoms to be able to see her photos. But she wants her friends to see them. Her profile is private, but randoms can still see her default photo.

I think when you upload a photo to your album, you should be able to decide who sees it

Eg, you have to tick one of these options:

‘allow this photo to be viewed by everyone’
‘allow this photo to be viewed only by my friends’
‘allow this photo to be viewed only by me’

I’m not sure what would happen when randoms view your album. Would they see a blank photo saying ‘only this users friends may view this photo’? Or would there be no indication of hidden photos?

Why is this so important? Because sometimes there are certain photos of yourself that you dont want randoms to see. Like cleavage shots or emo pics. But you dont exactly want your whole album and profile private.

Eg for me, I love people being able to see my profile because I put alot of work into it. But I don’t want shitheads like dean (someone who keeps harassing me ) to see my pics because they make fun of them.

Different Levels of Profile Privacy

You should be able to have something small on your page if you decide to make it completely private.

Because the world is full of nosy people; they just want to see your pics or page or comments. They might not necessarily wish to be your friend, but they add you anyways just to see your profile.

So if you decide to make your profile private you should be able to write in a section about yourself or a message to the randoms that view your page. Like, I’d say the following:

I’m a shy anti-social girl who doesnt drink smoke do drugs or sleep around.
If that disappoints you, dont add me.

Because currently, you cant tell anything about someone who has a provate profile. and maybe they want to explain why its private? They should be given the chance to explain themselves if they want to, whilst still hiding their profile.

Even More Privacy

There should be more input areas when editing your profile.

One area for randoms and one for your friends. If this ended up being an option for MySpace, the above suggestion wouldn’t be necessary. Because you could choose what the randoms see, and what your friends see.

Why is this a good idea? Because sometimes you want people to see your coding and the hard work you put into it. But there might be something you want only your friends to see like poetry etc. This is similiar to the pictures thing.

When editing your profile, you should be able to tick an option, just like the photo idea:

‘allow all users to view this section’
‘only allow my friends to view this section’

Then when editing your page you can either click:

View my page as random
or
View my page as friend

So you can see how your page looks to randoms and how your friends see it.

Friends Management

Some people have alot of myspace friends and it can be very difficult to keep track of them all. Friends management needs to be brought in so you can group your friends. Obviously other users wouldnt be able to see how you’ve grouped your friends.

Eg. I’d group my friends like this:

School friends - Myspace friends - Xbox people - Randoms - Artists

You should be able to create different categories and drag your friends into the category you want them in. Or maybe even, when you accept or request a friend, you can choose then and there what category they go into.

Friend Requests

Its common knowledge that accepting someones friend request means you should go to their profile and leave a comment saying thanks for the add.

But when you click accept, their page is gone from your friend requests. And you have to click back on your browser to see it, then click it to go to their profile, then click leave comment blah blah blah..

What about a button that says:

‘accept and view profile’ Or ‘accept and leave comment’

Bulletins

You should be able to select if you receive bulletins from certain people.

A button saying 'do not accept bulletins from this user'

Not sure if there should be an option where the user can see who isnt getting their bulletins. Perhaps yes. That way you know who won't see what you post and you can PM them if you really need to.

Just like you can currently view who is subscribed to your blog. You should be able to see who is subscribed to NOT receive your bulletins.

More About Subscribing

I like to perve on people on myspace; admit it, you do it too. Randoms, friends, exes… (ok I cant perve on my non existant ex but I would if I could k?)

I also love to leave pic comments for my closer friends. Aaaaand save their pics to my laptop.. for err… photoshop usage. (for real, I create animations of my friends for my profile so I actually have a reason to save their pics)

Anyway, wouldn’t it be good if you could subscribe to someones photo album? Perhaps only an option if you are on their friends list.. ‘click here to subscribe to this users album’

then just like a blog subscription, you get a message saying:

‘new album subscription photos!’

and for the person who has people subscribed to their album;

‘view users subscribed to my album’

just like a blog baby, just like a blog.

Comments

Most people hide their comments as it is. Derrr. Either because it stuffs up the flow of their profile (like it would mine, imagine the fugly comments on my page!?!?!! Sooo wouldn’t flow with my coding)

Or because they just don’t want their comments seen by randoms.

‘allow my comments to be viewed by all myspace users’

‘only allow my friends to view my comments’

Another thing with comments.. I think randoms should be able to comment you or your pics if u allow it. They can randomly comment ur blog, why not ur page too?

Since one of the great benefits of having a MySpace account is making friends, it is important to know how to accept or deny an add new friend request. There are factors to consider in making a decision whether to accept or reject a possible friend. The next section will talk about some of these factors, and also on how to accept or reject a new possible friend.

You must be logged into your own MySpace account first in order to check for new add requests. You need to decide to receive email notice when you got a new friend requests, it's a smart feature. You still need to be logged into your Myspace account to accept or reject the request. Enter the page by:

* clicking the "Home" link of your profile * type www.myspace.com into your web browser, and then click log in.

Check for a new friend requests the moment your into your MySpace account.

From your homepage, about half way down on the left side of the page, you will find a box with a mark "My Mail". Here you will find links to guide you to execute four tasks. Tasks include:

* viewing your inbox * viewing your sent mail * posting a bulletin * viewing your friend requests

When you enter "Friend Request", you can check for any new add requests and also add request with pending approval. The moment you enter, you will to find a request from another MySpace member to be your friend. You may also view pending request you made from this page.

On the "Friend Request" page, at the left side of the menu you will find a link that says "Pending Request". Entering here and you will see friends request you created and are still pending for approval.

Check the MySpace profile of a new friend request before accepting. This will help you in making judgment. These include:

* allowing you to compare likes and dislikes * allowing you to see if you know the person from your real life * allowing you to see that this request isn't really Spam

It's better to check who you are accepting as MySpace friends.

Since I started the site a short few months ago (which now has a Google Page Rank of 3!), the amount of time I can give has reduced due to other real life stuff - so I'm seeing if there are any people out there who would like to write up some of the wishes for the site and generally add to the place. If you're interested, please drop me a line via the contact form and let me know your ideas and skills - treat it like a job interview

So many guys have asked me lately, Cash, how can I get a girl off myspace to my house?. Many guys don't realize that online game is actually much, much, harder than real life game. Online the rules are different and if you don't know the rules you will fall flat on your face. So how do you get a girl off myspace you ask? I will tell you the easiest fool proof way I've taught guys to do it. It doesn't take much effort or luck really, its about knowing the environment of myspace dating thoroughly before you get involved. First, before you go off randomly messaging every hot chick you see while browsing please, please take good photos of yourself. Take the best photos you can of yourself. I mean this in every aspect from your clothing, to the background, down to even the resolution of the picture. Take a few pictures in a few poses and put your best three to four pictures on your myspace. Too many pictures increases your chance of turning off a female that may be browsing. You can offend them in so many ways, so I tell guys to abide to the four picture rule to minimize their risk of losing a potential date before even beginning. Okay now your ready to start messaging singles. Use the browse button on myspace and enter your zip code. From there you should get thousands of results of females in your area. Feel free to use the advanced search tab if your not receiving the results you'd like. The advanced search tab allows you to narrow down the choices by hair/eye color, height, ethnicity, and more. Once you find a handful of women you like its time to message them. A lot of guys crash and burn in this step. Remember this is the Internet and the rules are not the same as real game. On the net the women are the choosers so do not expect every woman you message to reply to you. Your going to have to message around 25 girls before you start getting a good stream of replies. A good thing to use is a myspace robot which will allow you to add and message lots of people at once. Send the women you are interested in a simple message. I tell guys to go with something like Hi! Nice profile! and thats it. If she likes your picture she WILL respond. When she replies, thank her for her reverse compliment if she offers one and ask if she has instant messenger. Once you get her on messenger, chop it up about whatever you like for a while and get her phone number. Once you have her number its back to regular game. Call her up randomly, and ask to hang out or go on a simple date. Don't pressure anything too serious at first, just keep it light. It's all on you once you get the number, you've got her at this point! About the Author Sean Cash is author of The Lazy Man's Guide To Dating.

If you’ve spent any time on MySpace, the most popular website in the U.S, you’ll have probably noticed that the profiles without a good profile picture have few friends. MySpace being what it is, a place of social networking typically is very personal in nature. People want to see the real you and they want to know that there’s a real person on the other side of their computer screen.

One of the ways to get a lot of involvement in your profile is to upload a good variety of pictures. The more fun and interesting pictures you upload to your profile the better. People love to comment on them and its fun to see what everyone has to say.
When you add a short comment you encourage others to participate in commenting on them.

MySpace does not allow any offensive or copyrighted photos on their website. These include pictures of nudity or offensive images. They monitor their site and claim to delete the accounts of offenders. One other thing to consider is their policy of only allowing a maximum photo size of 600k or less. Anything larger will not be accepted.

To add a photo to your MySpace profile you need to sign in and select ‘Upload/Change Photos.’ Then you’ll want to select ‘Browse’ to find the desired picture on your computer. Once you’ve located the file you wish to upload select ‘Open’ from the menu. Now that you’ve selected a picture from your computer the directory path will show up in the MySpace upload box. Click on ‘Upload’ to send it to your profile.

Once your picture has been uploaded to your profile you can choose to set it as your default picture. Your default picture is the one everyone sees when you make a comment or message or when they visit your profile page.

Don’t use your profile pictures as a place for storage. If you have uploaded a lot of pictures to your profile it may take longer to load. If you need to store your pictures online there are many free photo storage sites to choose from.

Make sure to select pictures that represents you and your interests. If your profile is all about your favorite activity, then by all means make sure you’re doing your favorite activity in the picture. It’s true that on MySpace a picture says a thousand words. Get a great picture uploaded and start making some friends.

It’s very easy to start your own group on Myspace and the benefits of starting your own group are many. For one, as the founder of a group and the moderator you have control over the rules of your group. You set whether you’d like your group to be public or private as well as how the group operates.

The best reason to form your own group is in its ability to get you exposure. Groups are a great marketing vehicle to get your point across. They can enable you to get in on the best kind of marketing, word of mouth. As the moderator you can begin to create a relationship of trust with others in the group and speak directly to them.

As the group founder your profile link will be listed at the top of your group page. This will help you get a great amount of visibility. Whenever someone clicks on your profile picture your profile will be displayed. Once you begin getting a considerable amount of people to your page it’s very easy to have beneficial results. How you harness the power of these visitors will depend on your objectives and the way your profile page is set up.

Starting your own Myspace group is not hard and anyone who has had their account for at least seven days can start a group of their own. To get started, click ‘Groups’ from your Myspace page. Then select ‘Create Group’ from the link on the left side of the page. You’re then delivered to the ‘Create a Group on Myspace’ page. Here you’ll be able to select the specifics of your new group.

One of the most important decisions you’ll make when starting a new group is selecting its name. The name should be thought of as the groups headline and choosing the right name can make or break your group’s success. You might consider adding certain keywords to your group’s name that will help it stand out in searches. You’ll also want to consider what appeals to those you might be interested in your group’s topic. Taking a little extra time to devise the perfect group name will be time well spent.

Once you’ve determined a catchy name and have filled in the intricate details of your group to be, you’ll want to enter a description and select a URL. The short description you choose should set the tone for your group’s purpose and is in essence a billboard for others to join your group and click on it. Your long description is what people will see when they enter your group page. Make sure to add your relevant keywords related to your topic in the description of your group to enable it to be found in relevant searches.

Now you’ll be ready to select a unique group URL. This might take several try’s to find one that is just right do to the fact that there are over 2 million groups. Many of the prime URL’s have long been taken and you might need to settle for a longer URL than hoped for. Using relevant keywords in your group URL will help you rank better for the keyword and can make the group easier to remember. After you have made your selections click ‘Create Group’ to finish the process. Now that your new group is created you’ll still need to upload some pictures to make it stand out.

The most successful groups are the ones that have a lot of visitor involvement. You’ll want to get right to work inviting others to your new group to get it off the ground. When people start signing up consider offering them moderator positions to create interest. Encouraging others to participate in the group will make it far easier to be a successful one.

One of the best ways to find people of like minded interest is through the use of Myspace groups. Myspace has an amazing variety of people with an immense amount of different interests. In fact, there are over two million different groups on Myspace. With all of the different groups you’re sure to be able to find what you’re looking for.

To get involved with groups and be able to discuss issues regarding the groups interests you must first join. Upon joining a group you’ll than be able to participate in conversations and post pictures to the group.

You can get started by selecting ‘Groups’ from the Myspace webpage. Then select the category of groups that most interests you. If you do not see a category that closely resembles the group there is a search box to help you. The search box is located at the bottom of the page and you can use it to enter any keyword you wish.

Once you’ve discovered the category you wish to browse, you can look at the listings until you find one of interest. Once you’ve found a group that looks promising click on the group’s title to select it. There is also a join link to the right of the group name if you wish to immediately make a request to join.

After you’ve clicked on the group name you’ll be delivered to the group home page. There you can read the most recent group postings as well as get a feel for the groups overall vibe. From the group home page you can see many of the details regarding the group. Including when it was founded, the amount of members, its membership type and its location. Some groups are private and membership is by invite only or at the approval of the group moderator.

If you like the group you see there is a join group button on the group home page. Selecting the group will bring up a Myspace prompt asking you to confirm. If the group is public you should immediately become a part of the group and be able to participate in contributing to the group. As a group member you are often able to post messages, start a new topic, upload pictures and send a bulletin to all members. Look at your individual group for its specific rules.

When you have joined several groups you will be able to see them all listed by selecting ‘My Groups’ from your group page. Selecting an individual group will allow you to see the details of that group. If you wish to change your individual group privacy settings you can select ‘Privacy’ from your group’s home page. From the privacy page you can determine whether you wish to receive bulletins from all members or from the group moderators. You are also able to select whether you would like to be notified from your group page if a new post has been made in your group.

If you haven’t yet begun participating in the groups, what are you waiting for? With all the choices you’re sure to find something that suits your taste and individual interests.

Your Header, About Me, I’d Like to Meet, Interests, etc.

Only problem is, it’s all a bit too similar to everyone else - so the first thing I did was find a workaround so I could put my own section headers on - how I did it is in my post about section headers, coincidentally enough - but for everyone else, it would be nice to be able to rename your section headers to something more meaningful to how you want to put across your profile.

Personally I think a slightly more useable feature would be a Personal Alias - so you can see whatever your friend has called themselves this week, with a sub heading of your personal name (or note even) or even the other way around with your alias followed by their name depending on your preference.

I wish they would remove or limit these CSS functions:
