Meebo and MySpace

On my profile I’ve added a Meebo - “A what?” you ask.

Meebo is a web based IM that lets you log into your IM networks from any computer with a browser and internet connection with no firewall issues. It employs technologies (like AJAX) to make it act more like a desktop application, which dramatically improves usability. Many users enjoy the benefits of a native DHTML application, as it does not consume as many system resources as a Java applet (such as ICQ2Go or Yahoo Web Messenger).

Some users are also experimenting with setting meebo as their Active Desktop page to use meebo like a native Windows application for their instant-messaging purposes.

“But we have the MySpace IM!” - Ah, but does it also allow you to access your other Instant Messaging programs? Such as MSN, AIM, GTalk, ICQ, Jabber and Yahoo messengers? Meebo does - as well as having multiple chat windows on as many sites as you want to have them on! All accessible from a single webpage, whch can be used from anywhere in the world.

So far, my experiences with it have been good - it’s fairly easy to set-up an account and thankfully embedding the Meebo code into your MySpace profile page was painless; I was expecting to have to hack the code, due to MySpace’s way of rewriting some HTML codes to prevent malicious attacks. Then, with an able volunteer via my othe IM programs, I co-ordinated a field test with an equal amount of success.

Considering that this is classified as Alpha grade technology, not even Beta, I am seriously impressed - there are a few more things that can make it a much more useable application for my sort of web use - possibly a ticketing system - if you run a busy site/profile, then you could conceivably have a lot of people wanting to talk to you personally, so being able to allocate a queue would be useful to my mind.

Also, being able to style the Meebo chat window on your site to match your colour scheme would not go amiss, but I believe that may be in the works anyway - on my MySpace profile, the box is a default size from the choices allowed, so doesn’t quite fit in - but I’m still happy with it ;)
You can create your own Meebo widget from here

Then create a Meebo ID to log into the main site here - this is where you can also add your other messenger ID’s.

Send in your wish - I will review it and add it to the site!
